Rebecca Otto hires former top Bernie Sanders staffer Jake Sanders
Hiring move seeks to engage grassroots activists and unite the DFL party
SAINT PAUL—Minnesota Governor candidate State Auditor Rebecca Otto today announced the hiring of former top Bernie Sanders staffer Jake Sanders to lead her caucus effort.
“We are building a grassroots movement to end the politics of greed that is threatening our quality of life and get back to politics that works for all the people,” said Otto. “With the addition of Jake Sanders to our team, we are signaling to every voter out there that we want you as a part of our movement.”
“What I like about Rebecca Otto is she isn’t trying to cast herself as more liberal or more moderate,” said Sanders, “she just is who she is. We’re not going to have to guess where she stands on an issue. She will look you in the eye and tell you—and her record backs it up. That’s what Minnesotans are looking for in their next leader. She’s the right candidate at the right time, and I’m excited to be sharing her vision with Minnesotans around the state.”
Sanders, a longtime DFL party leader in the 7th Congressional District, will bring Otto considerable organizing power in Greater Minnesota, adding to her already strong support among environmentalists, progressives, and women. He noted that the same Greater Minnesota congressional districts that supported Donald Trump in the general election strongly supported Bernie Sanders in the Minnesota straw poll.
“The last time a candidate from Greater Minnesota won the Governor’s race was Rudy Perpich,” said Sanders. What we need is a candidate with strong Metro support who also connects with people across the rest of the state. Rebecca Otto is the only candidate who consistently does both. She lives on a farm, and Farmfest is held on her family's former farm. She served on the Ag Policy & Ag Finance Committees in the Legislature and she has served on the Rural Finance Authority board for the last 11 years. She's also a former public school teacher, she built and sold a 50-employee business, she built her own green home with her own hands, and she's got a decade of statewide executive experience overseeing billions of dollars. No matter where you live in Minnesota, she has a connection to you.”
Sanders’ experience in grassroots organizing and movement-building spans the state. He worked for the Bernie Sanders campaign in 5 states including as the State Director of North Dakota, which Bernie Sanders won heavily. Prior to joining the Sanders campaign, he served on the leadership team for MN4Bernie.
Sanders lives in Glenwood with his wife Megan, where they run a small business and raise their three children.
